A short demo using my YourRock with the new IPad Garageband. They work together so well, GarageBand on the IPad is fantastic!

That's terrific!

Do you think that Garageband now offers the best sounds for MIDI control on the iPad? Have you tried the sounds in any other apps like Nanostudio or Music Studio?
(I'm looking for the best quality and variety of sounds - mostly NON-guitar sounds.)

Thanks!

Nanostudio seems to have more of a synth sound base (80s era) and Music Studio's instruments all sound much like the quality of higher end workstations from 15 years or so ago. If you are talking about non analog-synth type sounds, iPad GB is a great value, though it does not currently have many instrument choices. If Apple plans to move more sounds over from the desktop version, though, it will be hard to beat. I am finally selling off the rest of my music studio stuff (Yamaha W7, etc.) because the desktop GBs sounds are just so much better than what I have been using, at a fraction of the cost. Heck, buying a MacBook just for use as a sound module is less than a comparable synth Smiley

Terrific - thanks for the info. It seems that for what I'm interested in - natural instrument sounds (e.g., pianos, sax, vibes, flutes), Garageband offers the best quality, if not quantity for the iPad. And that overall, the ipad is still far behind what is available for a MacBook. Let's hope Apple ports over more of their sounds to the iPad.
Thanks again.

Figured it out.  Was using USB to midi rather than USB to mini USB.  Working fine now.

That is really cool...especially for portability and ease of use it cant be beaten.Of course if you want to write and record tracks of at least decent quality ipad wont do.You need quality samples vsts...and most important processing power to run good programs such as logic ,pro tools or digital performer.Garageband simply wont do.Its so entry level and although free you cant have results that dont sound plastic. You need at least a macbook and even that is borderline ok.If you have money to have both then its ok....but ipad alone for music is streched to the bone.
All that of course is for someone who thinks that he can use ipad for recording or playing decent quality instruments. For having fun like that its perfectly ok.

I disagree. With the right user you can get some amazing results. I've heard music produced on ipad that sounds as good as anything released from a major record company and on the other hand I have heard peoples music produced with hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of equipment and I can't even get past the first minute because it's so bad. Sure some software is entry level but still way ahead of the technology The Beatles, Rolling Stones or even Pink Floyd had in the early days.

When I got my You Rock and an iRig midi I really thought about doing a whole record on my iPhone. It obviously would not be a traditional "Metal" or "World" type thing that I would usually do in a regular studio but the creative juices get rolling and then you see how many ways you can use technology to create and it really is inspiring! On the GB topic though I tend to lean towards using my Ibanez for main guitar stuff then use the YRG for all the other sounds (aside from drums although I've triggered some drum sounds with the YRG too). But so far Garageband and Sampletank are the best sounding APPS I've used the YRG with.
